In this piece, the conductor becomes the "miragecaster" a fictional sorcerer with the magical ability to cast mirages and manipulate illusions, while the band becomes the mirage. In the middle of the piece are two passages of layered ostinato patterns written with aleatoric notation labled as two "mirages." Here, the conductor has the opportunity to cue sections in and out at their discretion, casting the "mirage" and allowing each performance of the piece to be unique.
